    Bundle Description
This Headbands Bundle is now complete and is perfect for your upper elementary students as they study Black History this year! Headbands games are great for ice breakers, warmups, and review! Easy to use as a whole class activity or at a center. While playing a commercial version of this game with our family, from the littlest ones who can’t read yet to grandmas and grandpas, the ease and value of this format just jumped out at me! Why not get your students up and moving around, connecting with each other, while recalling facts about the life and times of famous figures in Black History?

The close reading article in each game, written by me, is an expanded version of the one found in my "Letters to Heroes" resource. After completing the close read activity, play is simple. Students move from one partner to another, asking questions to help him/her guess the fact that is printed on the card in his/her own headband. A close read page and two scaffolded response pages are included so that students can become familiar with the concepts on the headband cards before playing. (You can accomodate students who need a little more prep by allowing them to also read the headband cards ahead of time.) Allow enough time for students to move around, ask several questions, take short notes, and finally make (say or write) a guess as to what the fact is on his/her own card.

Headbands to use for this activity are easy to find or make. Try the dollar store or parent donations for stretchy knit headbands. Students can also make their own custom headbands if you place some strips of construction paper or cardstock at a center. If time allows, they might even try decorating their headbands.

To prepare for this game, just print the pages. I would use cardstock and then laminate if you would like to use this game again in years to come. Cut the cards apart and mix them up. Students draw cards from a face down pile and place in their own headband, facing out.

    Included in each resource:
Student direction page (Use as a poster if this is a center activity.)
Close read article on the life and times of the featured historical figure
Two scaffolded close read response pages
Suggested question cards so students can gather clues (10 questions in all)
28 headband fact cards in full color and also in grayscale
Question/Response collection page for note taking
Blank cards to add your own questions/facts to the mix!
