Lesson Plan: Food and Nutrition
Description: In this unit, students will learn the benefits of maintaining good nutrition with a well balanced diet. The students will be able to categorize foods into the correct food group, decide if a meal is balanced, and be able to create a full day menu that demonstrates what they have learned.
Students will use the background knowledge of food and nutrition from previous knowledge leading up to this lesson. They will keep a food journal that tracks their food intake for a 24-48 hour time frame and categorize foods into the proper food groups. Students will also use a Venn diagram to help distinguish between healthy foods and snack foods and also distinguish between fact and opinion.

Lesson Plan: How to Maintain a Nutritious Diet
Description: After studying the benefits of and reasons for maintaining good nutrition and a well-balanced diet, and after learning the function and use of the food guide pyramid, students will apply the knowledge gained to their own eating habits. They will learn valuable ideas for incorporating good eating habits into their everyday lives. Students will work in cooperative groups to write and/or discuss, then act out a small skit involving true-to-life food choice decisions. These skits will then be videotaped and presented as a classroom production of mini-skits.
