These activities were designed for extended practice in literacy workstations or small groups. Use after instruction has taken place on healthy eating habits, where food comes from, and dental health.

Skills included: Complete sentences, R-Controlled Vowels, Sight Word Idenitification, Contractions, Expository Writing, and Synonyms

Activities included are:
{Pocket Chart Sentences} Provide students with a pocket chart or area large enough {on the floor} to arrange the words in an order that makes a complete sentence. Each word in each sentence has matching clip art to avoid confusing words from one sentence with another.

{Park the Car} Students will work in a pair to read and mark words containing r controlled vowels. Afterwards, students can reflect by changing the onset of each word to create a real or nonsense rhyming word.

{Sight Word Scramble} Students will use magnetic letters to build and spell sight words. The answer to each scramble is printed in tiny letters along the right side of the card for self checking. *Lakeshore Learning's magnetic alphabet fits perfectly into each letter box.

{Contractions Fold and Learn} Students will cut and glue to match contractions, then reflect by using a set of words in a sentence. Construction paper will be needed.

{Steps of Tooth Care} Students will write to tell the steps of maintaining healthy teeth. Picture cards are provided.

{Visit the Dentist Synonym Match} Students will read to match pairs of synonyms. Self checking/matching pictures have been added to the bottom of each card to ensure correct matches. Students will then use one of a choice of 2 reflection sheets to record their learning.

{Writing with Contractions} Students will match contractions to their set of '2 words', then write to record their learning by using contractions in sentences.

*BONUS....{My Favorite Food} Students will complete a prewriting activity, then publish a lunch bag book to tell about their favorite food. Paper lunch bags and primary writing paper will be needed.
