Product Description
The Healthy Habits: Preventing Illness and Disease contains materials to support your students as they learn about illness and disease. The digital teaching box uses a variety of multi-sensory learning activities that address different learning styles of students.

Included in this teaching box:

- a class book (No Germs Allowed),
- 3 simulation activities (Transmitting Diseases through the air, direct - contact, and indirect contact),
- 2 word sorts (Being Sick & Short and Long Term Illness),
- 2 original songs (Today is a Sick Day and I am Feeling Healthy),
- a board game (Healthy Habits),
- 3 dictionary options (full page and booklets),
- posters and trading cards (Crazy Connections),
- a matching game (Crazy Connections Matching Activity),
- a role play activity (Doctor Role Play Activity),
- a student booklet (Illness and Disease Student Booklet),
- word wall cards, and
- a word list.

Consider creating the activities and placing them in a “teaching box” to use during the unit. You can then pull out the activities as needed. An optional student activity booklet is included. Students can complete these pages at the end of the activities to determine student learning.

The activities in this package of materials support student learning of:

- common vocabulary used to talk about illness and disease,
- what being sick looks like, sounds like, and feels like,
- how diseases are transmitted (airborne, direct contact, indirect contact),
- good health habits to prevent getting sick,
- signs and symptoms of common illnesses,
- short-term and long-term illnesses,
- the difference between a healthy day and a sick day, and
- how to take care of self and others who are sick.

A unique feature of the digital teaching box is the inclusion of the Crazy Connections Posters and Trading Cards. Some vocabulary words are hard for students to learn and understand. Crazy connections support students as they learn new vocabulary. Students connect a visual to the new vocabulary word. For example, a balloon is used to “connect” to asthma because you need to use lots of breath to blow up a balloon. People with asthma can have trouble breathing so would not be able to blow up a balloon while they are having an asthma attack. After making the connection of a balloon to asthma, the balloon visual may help some students recall “asthma” and its definition. Crazy connections are provided for 27 different vocabulary words related to illness and disease.

All materials in the Illness and Disease Digital Teaching Box are provided in colour and in black and white.

The Illness and Disease Digital Teaching Box supports Saskatchewan Health Outcome USC2.3.
