PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Do your students struggle with learning new vocabulary words during an illness and disease unit? What not give crazy connections a try?

illness and Disease Crazy Connections Vocabulary Posters and Dictionary support students as they learn new vocabulary. Students connect a visual to a vocabulary word.

For example, a balloon is used to “connect” to asthma because you need to use a lot of breath to blow up a balloon. People with asthma can have trouble breathing so would not be able to blow up a balloon while they are having an asthma attack. After making the connection of a balloon to asthma, the balloon visual may help some students recall “asthma” and its definition.

The crazy connections are presented as posters and trading cards. The posters are useful when discussing the different words as a class and can be displayed in the classroom. The trading cards can be used by individual students or by small groups of students. Choose the form of crazy connections that best meets the learning needs of your students.

Create a Crazy Connections Box

Consider creating a “crazy connections” box of the digital picture cards or put actual objects (a balloon, a robot, etc.) into the box. When introducing new vocabulary, show students a digital card or an actual object that represents a vocabulary word. See if students can guess what word might be represented by the object. If students come up with the right word, discuss the word and its definition. If students are unable to come up with the word, provide the word and definition to the students. Ask students to make “connections” to the word and the object.

At the start of each class, pull out a few objects one at a time and ask students what word each object represents and its definition. Encourage students to come up with a movement that represents each object as well. By making this activity multi-sensory, you will be providing support to the different learning styles in your classroom. The connections box with digital cards (and possibly objects) can become part of a reading corner or activity center so students can reinforce their learning.
