Capture the spirit and excitement of Valentine's Day and review fast facts related to the heart at the same time with this word search and comprehension check bundle.
The word search contains fast facts related to the heart and contains key vocabulary associated with the heart lesson. The terms include:
1. left / right ventricle
2. left / right atrium
4. rib cage
8. four chambers, etc.
For added value to bilingual classrooms, the Spanish words for several of the terms are also hidden in the word search. "Ventrículo" was omitted on purpose for reasons that will be obvious to Spanish speakers.
The word bank is presented as fast facts with the key terms written in bold print. This not only exposes students to the key vocabulary (which is the core purpose of the activity) it also encourages students to read the entire fast fact for learning.
The word search can serve as either a warm-up / bell ringer or as a post-lesson activity / brain break. Once students have completed the word search, the Comprehension Check worksheet provides students with additional practice and offers the teacher another tool to see how much students remember about the heart.
The Comprehension Check is a fill-in-the-blank worksheet that contains the fast facts given to students in the word search. Students simply fill in the blanks with the bolded key words.
There are two versions of the Comprehension Check. One version provides the key terms in an alphabetized word bank (intended for developing learners and students with accommodations) while the second version contains no word bank.
I think that this bundle of materials will be a great addition to lessons about the heart / circulatory system, it can be fun and instructional as a Valentine's Day lesson, and I think that it provides opportunity for collaboration (if desired by the teacher).
It can also be an effective addition to your substitute teacher plans.
