This is a great beginning of the year lesson for your Writer's Workshop. Students fill in their heart map (with drawings, magazine clippings, anything really!) with the important things in their life - people/places they love, their favorite things, things they are interested in, etc. The maps are displayed in the classroom or kept in a writing folder, and anytime students get writer's block they refer back to it. *Note - I am not sure where this super lesson idea originated. Details can be found on Scholastic's website and many other places on the web.
This download includes a "Our Heart Maps" poster in three different styles for you to display on a bulletin board if you choose. It also includes a blank heart map template for older children and a heart map with a name line and pre-divided spaces for the little ones.
