Students love getting out of their seats and this lab puts their energy to good use. In this lab, students investigate the relationship between exercise and heart rate and look at how the body maintains homeostasis of oxygen. First, students take their pulse while resting and then again after exercising for several minutes. They graph their results and look at how the body adapted to maintain homeostasis during a time of increased oxygen demand. They then apply their learning to analyze heart rate data for people who exercise regularly and consider implications for designing an artificial heart. This lab will allow your students to practice reading and answering text dependent questions, gathering and analyzing data, and applying their thinking to solve real world problems.
