Perfect for my first graders! I appreciate that the format stays the same so that I don't have to explain the directions as often!
I have used this resource for students with learning disabilities to teach irregular or tricky parts of words.

Description

Learning heart words and high frequency words doesn't have to be tricky! Heart word mapping helps your students connect sounds to letters so that these words make sense! These Science of Reading sight word practice worksheets include a variety of ways to work with each word.

These Science of Reading Heart Words worksheets are aligned with research from the science of reading and based on best practices for learning sight words or high frequency words.

PLEASE NOTE: Some words included are high frequency words and NOT heart words! Some words may be temporary heart words (until students are taught those phonics rules) or are fully decodable. However, they were included because teachers wanted consistency in their practice.

Instructions are included for how to map words inside; you will not assign any hearts to a fully decodable word. Instructions are also included for how to map sounds like /ks/ or silent /wu/ or silent e.

How to use these heart sight word practice pages:

  1. Students will say the word.
  2. They will tap the sounds in the word.
  3. They will map the word, using their finger to "push" the sounds up into the sound boxes.
  4. They will map the word, writing a phoneme in each sound box. If multiple letters make a sound, they will share a sound box (b - ea - ch).
  5. They will draw a heart over the tricky part. This may depend on what phonics skills you've taught students.
  6. They will rainbow write the sight words, coloring each sound a different color.
  7. They will use the letter tiles to build the sight words.
  8. They will write the heart words four times. If you want, you can have students draw hearts over the tricky parts here too.
