Teaching Joseph Conrad's novel (or novella), Heart of Darkness, can be daunting, but "take heart!" (pun intended) focusing on themes helps students retain other literary aspects of the story, such as: characters, plot, and imagery. The story is a frame narrative and the language is dense. Nevertheless, Conrad's story continues to be read by high school students all over the US – particularly honors-level and AP students. This product contains four different activities, which can be used for potentially different purposes. For instance: the discussion passages can also be used for memorization/recitations, homework writing assignments, or impromptu classroom "acting auditions;" or the definitions from the vocabulary list can be deleted, i.e. students research and report the definitions as an assignment.
Note: The only "key" is to the vocabulary quiz. This product is not a replacement for not reading the book.
