This essay assignment asks students to read a short passage from the opening of Heart of Darkness and write an analytical essay that discusses how Conrad's tone helps to establish the overall meaning of the text. I use this essay assignment at the end of the novella in my AP Literature class. I allow students to brainstorm ideas about the passage in small groups, but they ultimately write their essays for homework. They bring in a printed hard-copy to class for a group peer-edit workshop day. In small groups, students work through their own essays, along with the groupmates' essay, and follow step-by-step revision directions. The peer-editing day is great - very little work for me - and students' always find areas to improve in their essays due to the specific directions they follow and discuss in their groups. I do not grade their rough draft essays, just the final draft - after the group revision workshop. What is included: prompt, passage, suggestions, thesis statement model, revision workshop directions. This assignment is perfect for AP level classes and preparation for the AP exam.
