In this lab, students will compare the temperature of water in jars wrapped in different material to determine which type of materials are thermal insulators and thermal conductors.
In my class, we had temperature probes that hooked up to computers. The temperature probe read the temperature of the water every minute for ten minutes. If you do not have this kind of technology at your school, you can simplify by having the students read the temperature of the water at one minute and the temperature of the water at ten minutes. Then students find the difference in temperature. This allows students to see which material allowed the heat to stay in the jar and which material allowed the heat to leave the jar.
I have included a lab sheet with the materials my students used and I have also included a lab sheet with blank materials so you can adapt the lab however you would like.
