Product Description
This 15-page packet provides you with everything you need to conduct a heat from friction investigation with elementary students.

Students will participate in 12 different stations, all featuring a different item. Students will test the friction on that item to determine if it can produce heat.

Although this lesson hits several scientific reasoning standards, I mainly use it to teach my first graders Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills 1.6A: "The student will identify and discuss how different forms of energy, such as light, HEAT, and sound are important in everyday life" {emphasis added by me}.

This packet contains the following:
- 2 pages of notes to you, including how to edit certain pages in this document and tips for teaching this lesson successfully
- a 4-page, detailed lesson plan with pictures of students in action
- 1 non-editable recording page that has 2 recording sheets per page so that you can easily use these with science notebooks or just to save paper {I chose the investigation materials for you}
- 2 editable recording pages with 2 recording sheets per page for easy use with science notebooks or for saving paper {You can choose and type in your own investigation materials or have the students hand write it}
- a picture collage that serves as a warm-up for the lesson
- 3 pages of station signs to hang up around the room prior to the lesson
- 1 page of editable station signs so that you can use your own materials
- 1 page of suggested literature that correlates with the lesson -- links provided to quickly and easily purchase the books

The packet downloads as a zipped file, so please make sure you have the ability to unzip files before purchasing. After unzipping, the lesson plan and components will open in PowerPoint. As stated above, three pages are editable, while the rest are not.

Suggested items to use include:
- tape
- toy car
- small plastic baggies
- small wax paper squares
- small fabric squares
- small sandpaper squares
- small felt squares
- 2 sponges
- small squares of plain copy paper
- small pieces of paper towel
- 4 random books

I just use whatever materials I have in my classroom. If you don't have something listed above, substitute it for something you already have and use the editable recording sheet and editable station signs with students!
