This unit was developed to be used in a first grade classroom. It can be modified to work in Kindergarten or second grade as needed. Begin this lesson with an introduction of the vocabulary. Display the vocabulary words on the word wall. Each vocabulary word has a corresponding picture to aid in meaning recognition. Four mini books are included that break the unit up into four areas:
• Jim’s Energy Adventure
The mini books are assembled by cutting them out and stapling in page order. There are a few activity sheets that go along with the theme:
• Main idea organizer: 3 types of Energy
o Students write or draw 3 types of energy in the circles
• Cut and paste Energy sheet
o Students cut out the different types of energy and paste it under heat, light, or sound energy.
• Writing worksheet
o Students draw a picture about what energy is and write about it.
• Jim’s Energy adventure worksheet
o Students label the things Jim saw on his adventure as light, sound, or heat energy.
• Energy all around us writing.
o Like Jim in the story students write about the energy they see each day.
Included assessment can be given when unit is complete.
This unit is designed to take about five 40 minute lessons with the assessment given on the 6th day. This can be modified depending on the level of your class. This will take me anywhere from 5-7 days depending on the day?
I developed this unit with the Common Core in mind. The importance of informational text and non-fiction reading is stressed within the Common Core through-out the grade levels. This presents material in a way that students do not seem threatened by, unlike a large text book. Also, writing in incorporated quite often as this is such an important and developing skill in first grade.
