Product Description

This activity can be used to introduce or reinforce learning about heat transfer, conduction, and thermal energy. This activity investigates how the amount of mass affects the amount of thermal energy by measuring how much heat is transferred between metal washers and water. The students first transfer thermal energy from hot water to metal washers and then transfer the energy again from the hot washers to the cups of cold water.

Materials:

3 Styrofoam cups

4 large metal washers

2 pieces of string – about 12 inches each

Cold and hot water

Thermometer

NGSS Standard:

MS-PS3-4. Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample

This comes from my “Quick and Cl-Ev-R” series. Each activity is designed for students to practice writing scientific arguments with Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning based on real world data and experiences. Each activity includes a quick hands on activity or demonstration, data collection, and corresponding reading focusing on the scientific concepts presented in the activity.

This activity is part of my:

C-E-R Physical Science Bundle

and

Heat Transfer Bundle
