This activity can be used to introduce or reinforce learning about heat transfer, conduction, and thermal energy. This activity investigates how the amount of mass affects the amount of thermal energy by measuring how much heat is transferred between metal washers and water. The students first transfer thermal energy from hot water to metal washers and then transfer the energy again from the hot washers to the cups of cold water.
3 Styrofoam cups
4 large metal washers
2 pieces of string – about 12 inches each
