This zip file contains three different laboratory activities which can be used to teach or reinforce heating and phase change concepts.
The specific activities and their descriptions are as follows:
1. Convection Lab Activity: This activity uses simple materials (tea bags or potassium permanganate may be used) along with a source of heat such as a bunsen burner to demonstrate convection in fluids to students. Students are asked to make a drawing of the results. The activity closes with six questions assessing the student learning in reference to this activity. An answer key to this two page lab activity is included for the questions.
2. Heat Transfer Bar Conduction Lab: This activity requires more specialized materials such as thermometers, aluminum heat transfer bars and styrofoam cup calorimeters. This classic activity introduces students to concepts such as conservation of energy, efficiency of heat transfer and conduction. An answer key to the questions is included with this three page activity.
3. Phase change lab
Students take a beaker containing a mixture of water and ice and heat it to boiling for four minutes. Students measure the temperatures of this water each minute during this experiment and use this data to construct their own phase change diagram. The students will then answer questions requiring them to process and interpret this data. This investigation requires only a heat source, beaker, water and ice and a thermometer which can be suspended in the liquid using a ring stand or other apparatus. An answer key to the questions is included with this four page activity.
