I used this lab in ICP class (9th and 10th grade), but can easily be adapted for middle school. The students shake jars of water to see if the temperature changes (because of the transfer of energy).
The lab paper includes the following sections
- state the problem
- data table
- questions to answer
Materials required for each lab station
- 1 graduated cylinder
- 2 glass jars with lids (I use mason jars)
- thermometer (1 or 2)
- newspaper to wrap (insulate) both jars
- water from tap
This is a fun lab that the students like. Students will be required to answer questions about calories (heat) transferred (including some calculations), write a hypothesis, record data in a data table, follow a procedure, and write a conclusion.
Easy lab setup!
