Caution: Do not purchase this if you have already purchased my Physical Science Volume #1 Detective's Review Bundle.
If you have purchased that bundle then you already have these activities. Also, please do not purchase this if you have already purchased Heat and Temperature Detective's Matching Review Bundle
. That bundle is currently being updated to include that set.
Your student detectives will solve the case about "Heat and Temperature" by completing this activity which includes 16 separate matching puzzle piece sets to review concepts associated with heat and temperature!
Students can match the puzzle pieces "just as they are" for a quick learning activity, or they can follow the review game directions. For the game, students can hide the edges of the long portion of puzzle pieces under the laminated set of review game directions. Each student picks up one short puzzle piece at a time and then pulls out a long portion to match with it. If it is correct then the puzzle pieces will fit together. If it is not correct then the student must slide the long portion under the laminated set of directions so that only the clue is showing again and the cut portion is hidden. Students can take turns. The one who has the most correct matches wins.
My students like to repeat this type of activity later as a quick review for the test. Students can also use them as a quick set of flash cards. One student can call out the clue on the long piece while not showing any of the card to the other student. The other student can use the short puzzle pieces as a word bank.
This activity can be used for individual students, learning centers, stations, pairs, or as a group activity. All you need to do is print, laminate, and cut the puzzle pieces and clue cards.
Topics for this review activity include the following:
Heat, temperature, calorie, specific heat, heat flow, absolute zero, thermometer, Joule, insulator, conductor, thermal energy, molecular or particle motion, temperature changes, units, freezing point, boiling point, Celsius, Kelvin
This set of activities is designed to help students obtain a basic knowledge of concepts associated with heat and temperatue.
Students must have a basic knowledge of these concepts in order to achieve goals and objectives that are associated with the following Next Generation Science Standards:
MS-PS3-4. Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample.
HS-PS3-2. Develop and use models to illustrate that energy at the macroscopic scale can be accounted for as a combination of energy associated with the motion of particles (objects) and energy associated with the relative position of particles (objects).
HS-PS3-4. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that the transfer of thermal energy when two components of different temperature are combined within a closed system results in a more uniform energy distribution among the components in the system (second law of thermodynamics).
