The Very Helpful Hedgehog book companion for speech language therapy!
If you do not have the book, let your students watch the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX7_PWQT0OE.
The video has Stephen Graham reading “The Very Helpful Hedgehog” by Rosie Wellesley. This is a very cute book about a hedgehog that likes to be alone and sleep in a pile of leaves. He does not have any friends and he likes it that way. He gets into a bit of trouble when an apple falls out of a tree and gets stuck in the quills on his back. A donkey finds the apple on his back and helps him out by eating it. The donkey is inside of a fenced in area and can’t get to the juicy apples that fall from the tree. This story makes the cute hedgehog stop thinking so much about himself and he begins to wonder if having friends might not be such a bad idea. Wonder if he will continue to bring the donkey juicy apples, since the donkey helped him out?
This book is an excellent way to introduce shy or withdrawn students to the importance of developing friendships. You can use the language homework sheet to let them list qualities of what they need to look for in a friend.
