I use this worksheet, which explains and guides students through the classic Heinz Dilemma, to help students understand character motivation. It can be used with any novel, and includes teacher discussion prompts to be used after students work in small groups to determine Heinz and the Druggist's motivations. I personally use it with my study of Fever 1793, allowing the students to analyze and understand the ways different characters reacted to the devastation which takes place. This activity works with all novels, or even as a stand-alone activity. Great discussions to follow! Happy teaching!
