Color Field Painting
Willem de Kooning
Helen Frankenthaler created her idea of beauty with her paintings and prints. Beauty was what got her into continual hot water with the art critics and continues to do so today. That she was lovely in appearance herself, when she joined the abstract expressionists in the 1950s, increased the rancor.
Her descriptions of herself as an artist gave her critics additional material for attacking her. In one such description she said, “The artist’s own wrist is of crucial importance…I believe that the wrist, that sensibility, must be in the whole concept of the making of the print…the artist of quality creates a beautiful graphic that ‘bleeds’ his sensibility – his feelings, magic, head, heart.”
Her repeated use of the words “beauty” and “quality” were the problem, especially since those were the same words she’d used in her non-support of NEA grants to Mapplethorpe and Serrano.
These terms were problematic according to the major critics and theorists. She was too wound up in the self in the creation of her art. That she had come from privilege, and had elite art connections from day one of her entry into the art world, they also found troublesome.
This debate over beauty in art is far from over. It rages with or without a Frankenthaler to tie to it. She has left a vast output of work which imparts her unique take on beauty. Only time will tell how enduring her work is.
