In this project, students help their "principal" plan the Fall Festival. Using their math knowledge from second grade and the beginning part of third grade, students are asked to do the following:
1) Round, estimate, and calculate the numbers of people in attendance. Students have to round to the nearest 10 and 100.
2) Calculate the cheapest of four food combinations. Students have to know how to add money/decimals, as well as compare money/decimal amounts.
3) Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction.
4) Create a poster to advertise the festival using different representations of numbers - standard form, word form, expanded form, and more.
Students will have a blast with this real-world project! It is challenging, but effective in getting students to review some of the basic skills.
