Are you tired of your students using overused "tired" words such as happy, bad, good, and sad? Help your budding writers add value to their essays and compositions by using this graphic organizer!
First, your students will have an opportunity to add $$$ to their writing by brainstorming engaging, advanced, and impressive synonyms for the "penny" words.
Next, students will rank the synonyms according to their power and value. "Is this synonym a 'nickel' word? a 'dollar' word?" Students will arrange the words in order of value in the graphic organizer.
When the entire chart is complete, instruct your students to paste it in their composition notebook or writing portfolio. My students refer to this self-created resource throughout the year as they complete various writing tasks.
**A fun extension: Assign your students a specific $$$ amount. For example, $10.00. Your students will then need to complete a writing task using the appropriate words that total that amount.
