Product Description
Color-Fill Film Guides are doodle notes for movies! They are perfect to leave with a sub., give for extension extra-credit, or just to use in class. Students color and answer prompts as they watch the film. The coloring aspect is just enough to help them concentrate. When the film is finished, they have an “Implications of Helter Skelter” page that asks them to consider the sociological implications of The Manson Family as a cult.

Helter Skelter chronicles the events surrounding the Manson Family from 1969-1971. Students will understand how the Manson Family was a cult and how its leader, Charles Manson, manipulated its members to commit terrible crimes. The film guide asks students to find examples of characteristics of cult leaders, steps of recruitment, characteristics of those at-risk, and evidence of the risky shift in the film.

Helter Skelter film is not included. It can be ordered on YouTube or Amazon. The film is the 2004 made for T.V. CBS version. Always preview films before showing to make sure they are appropriate for your students. Currently, a lesser quality version of the film may be accessed for free online (link provided).

You Get:

Two pages of Color-Fill Film Guides to use with the film
One page of the Implications of the event
One page of Color-Fill Notes to help students reflect on the event’s implications
Answer Key

There are many ways you can use Color-Fill Film Guides in your classroom, but here are three suggestions:

Assign them as substitute teacher lesson plans. Sociology teachers have a huge amount of content to cover. If you ever have to be out, these guides will ensure that your students’ time is not wasted. They will continue to learn about the topic in question while you are out. Instruct the sub to print the Film-Guide pages front to back. When you return, assign them the “Implications of” pages.

Use the Film-Guide in class as an assignment after you have taught the topic. Have students consider what you taught them along with the Implications Of Pages after the film is over.

Time is an issue for most teachers. Use these as an extension either for extra credit or homework to help your students to consider your topic of study further.

Or if you want to enrich your student’s understanding of cult tactics, show it at home, and use the guide for focus and as a springboard for discussion.
