You will download a ZIP file with 9 JPGs image files to be printed on 8.5 x 11 paper.
If you need a different type of image file, please contact me.
This activity is an open-ended one where the teacher reads the topic and the children respond by drawing their own interpretations in crayons, markers or colored pencils.
There is no right or wrong.
Henri Rousseau was a French customs officer who painted in his free time. He was very talented in the arts, music and math. He eventually quit to paint full time. His paintings are delightful compositions of fantasy scenes. He painted at the Paris Botanical Gardens or used magazine reference. He actually never visited a jungle.
The following 9 pages would make a great art packet, stapled together where the students can work at their own pace and creativity.
1. Introduction to Rousseau. Students are to read the DBAE instructions and answer in the boxes. (Discipline Based Art Education)
Photo References and Drawings (These can be done in any order)
3. Jungle Cats
4. Jungle Mammals
5. Tropical Birds
Rousseau Painting References
6. Rousseau Flora
7. Rousseau Fauna
Reaction and Practice Drawing - This is only the right half of the entire painting because the left half has a picture of a nude jungle model.
8. "The Dream"
Final Drawing. Students are to create their own "Jungle Fantasy" using their drawings and photo references.
9. Jungle Fantasy
Use of any copyrighted pictures by Henri Rousseau or photo references are used in Fair Use in Education and in the spirit that students will probably not be going scuba diving, and need the photo references to create a "Vivid and Realistic" vision in their creation, enhancing their artistic and scientific education.
Please contact me if you have questions or concerns. This is an open ended project and there are no directions, and no right ways or wrong ways to draw. Please give me a chance to help before leaving any negative feedback.
