Art is..Henri Rousseau's Fantasy World - (7 pages) The Football Players. Rousseau painted this picture in 1908, the year of the First International Rugby Game between England and France.
In this Zip File of jpeg pages, you will receive 1 page of photo references and 6 activity pages for students for Drawing Skills. This project involves learning to draw the human form and create a fantasy soccer game.
Each child should have their own 6 activity pages and the 1 photo references should be available at each table. Since students are more familiar with soccer, I am using soccer photo references and pictures, instead of rugby.
Henri Rousseau has long been my favorite artist. I loved his jungle pictures the best and was pleasantly surprised that he didn't go to the jungle to paint. Some of his images came from popular magazines and the Paris Botanical Gardens.
1. Introduction: "The Football Players" There are questions that the students are to write answers, to help them critique his painting. This is based on DBAE.
2. Practice Drawing Self-Portraits (Faces) This page is for students to practice facial proportions and drawing various faces.
Note that often Rousseau painted himself and his wife as the imaginary figures in his artwork.
3.-4. Practice Drawing Full Length Action Portraits. There is a separate page for girls and boys. Remind the students that they are creating a "Dream-like Fantasy" and to expect the unexpected.
5. Point of View Drawings. Students are to use the Photo References in their artwork and to practice drawing different viewpoints on this worksheet.
6. Final Artwork. They are also to create a "Fantasy Soccer Game." Remember it is their dream, their creation, so anything goes! Have them pay attention to the art elements and have fun!
Open Ended, is usually a student directed process, where they can draw their feelings, emotions, reactions to the art work in the blanks provided. They can choose to copy the designs, outlines the shapes/forms, or even just draw one aspect. Open ended is not assessed and there is no right or wrong. Just encourage active participation in some form.
Use of any copyrighted pictures by Henri Rousseau or photo references are used in Fair Use in Education and in the spirit that students will probably not be going scuba diving, and need the photo references to create a "Vivid and Realistic" vision in their creation, enhancing their artistic and scientific education., an imaginative art work!
