Henry is a slave who is sold as a child and later has his family sold away from him. After his wife and children are sold while he is away at work he decides to mail himself in a box to the free states. The story is based on a true story about the underground railroad.
This 2-4 day experience allows students to "think outside the box" by actually wondering "what's inside the box." This is sure to be a favorite lesson. My students often listed this activity as one of their favorites each year. I have used it with fourth, fifth and sixth grade students but it could go up or down. It's a wonderful few days which relies on your ability to provide intrigue and the students' ability to just imagine.
