Henry’s Freedom Box: A Reading Response Activity
This product was designed for students in third through fifth grades to complete before, during and after reading this text. The focus of this activity is on what good readers do. This lesson works very well as a teacher-directed read-aloud, but can easily be used as an independent activity for students. It would also work nicely as a Literacy Station.
Each open-ended question provides students with good reader habit, followed by a reading response question.
It’s an excellent activity for helping students to connect with a text on a higher level and at the same time, make text-to-world connections.
As a teacher who looks for very full, detailed answers from my students, I have double spaced each question and provided students with ample lines to record their responses.
This product includes:
• a brief user guide
• two-page assignment for students to complete before, during and after reading the text
• a checklist for students to complete prior to handing in their work
• a blank checklist template (Word doc) for you to customize to best suit your personal expectations for student work (simply insert a text box over the template)
• an answer key
• a page with two questions for those students working above grade level
The entire product is 11 pages long, with 4 being the worksheets themselves (3 pages +1 page for gifted students or higher level thinkers).
