Product Description

This product is everything the busy classroom has been looking for! You'll receive a FULL day of lesson plans based on Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine (a lesson for reading, writing, math, science, social studies, plus a craft/hallway display!).

How does this work?

Your download will come with 3 files: student activity sheets, teacher lesson plans, and an informational PowerPoint. Simply print, gather your materials, and GO! No need to look for extra activities, or write out your lesson plans.

Lessons Included:

Reading: Complete the interactive read aloud of Henry's Freedom Box. Then complete 4 activity sheets that focus on comprehension, character traits, and sequencing. The comprehension questions can be used as an informal or formal assessment if you wish! You can preview the comprehension questions as a FREEBIE at this link!

Math: 6 activity sheets at varying levels (in the 3-5th grade range). You may choose to use a few or all of these sheets based on the needs of your class. Skills include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, money, word problems, and more.

Writing: Your students will take the point of view of a runaway slave and write a narrative. A planning template and 4 versions of writing paper are included.

Science: Small groups will complete a STEM activity to help Martin and his box escape! Gather materials you already have and watch your students' creativity at work. Use the provided challenge cards, reflection sheets, and vote on the best creations!

Social Studies: Present an Underground Railroad PowerPoint to your class as they fill out scaffolded notes. Use the discussion questions, maps, and pictures to deepen understanding!

Craft: Use the information learned in the Social Studies PowerPoint and create a class freedom quilt. Display this in the hallway for the rest of the school to see!

Answer Keys are also included!
