This is a simple word sort for r-controlled syllables. Bossy r or r controlled vowels are sometimes tricky to read and spell. This sort is great for literacy centers and for word work lessons. This is intentionally simple and uncluttered. It works well with older struggling readers especially if you are using an Orton-Gillingham based remediation program.
I use the phrase "Her First Nurse" as a memory device for the three common spellings of /er/. This download includes a heading page with a nurse and baby and the phrase "Her First Nurse" and two sets of word cards. Set one includes single syllable words featuring er, ur, and ir. The second set contains two syllable words.
I use this as part of my introductory lesson. It would also be a good literacy center activity. You may wish to have the students copy the words onto paper after sorting the cards. I ask my students to divide their sheet of paper into three columns to record the words from the sort. I have provided both color and black and white versions of the word cards.
