This in class activity will require you to obtain 9 different herbs or spices and place them in a plain jar/plate/container, without labeling them by their name, instead label them # 1-9.
Students will come up to the smelling station in groups of 9 (or smaller) and move around the table sniffing each herb and spice and answering the questions for each number.
After they smell, they will be required to write about a new spice/herb they want to learn about. Then they will be asked to write 1 descriptive word about each spice/herb on boards across the room. You will need to set up large sheets of paper across the room, each written like so: Herb/Spice #1, #2, etc.
There are multiple sections to this activity:
Part 1: Listing herbs/spices they recall utilizing in the past.
Part 2: Begin smell/sniff test and answer questions about 9 different herbs/spices.
Part 3: Write about an herb/spice that you'd like to learn more about.
Part 4: Students will write 1 descriptive word on the boards/paper across the room.
Once all 4 parts are completed, it is a good idea to pass around the herbs/spices again and have the students sniff one more time, while revealing what each one is.
