Description

One of the largest needs in our schools and in our classrooms is access to appropriate and meaningful SEL (Social-Emotional) curriculum. Students need to be able to work through the five competencies of SEL: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making (© CASEL 2017).

This picture book, Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers, is a great example of how we can use literature to help instill these SEL skills into our students' hearts and minds. This book speaks to diversity and inclusion of others and making sure everyone feels included. It also highlights the need for acts of kindness, large and small. This book is a fantastic cross-curricular book for Space as well!

This resource includes a two-page lesson plan, six student-driven activities that focus around SEL topics, and a before-reading graphic organizer to tie in literacy and science standards.

Inside of the lesson plan, you will find:

  • A "Before Reading" activity or set of questions.
  • A "During The Reading" set of questions.
  • An "After the Reading" activity or set of questions.

The student-driven activities focus around:

  • Close-reading comprehension questions that all focus on the SEL skills you want your students to learn and practice.
  • Questions that challenge students' thinking on a topic.
  • Questions that reinforce what they might do or say if they were in the story.
  • Working definitions of SEL skills (such as empathy).
