Description

Introduce Heredity with this easy to use and check worksheet. Students will do a 4 page guided reading and complete activity pages using the information they have learned. Product also includes a bonus graphic organizer for summarizing. All pages of this resource are doodle friendly and interactive!

Note: This resource does not cover Punnett squares. Rather, it introduces the concepts of heredity and the patterns that govern these as they are passed from parent to offspring.

Approximate Reading Level: 4-5th Grade

Topics covered includes:

  • Genes and Traits
  • Key Vocabulary including: Dominant, Recessive, Genotype, Phenotype, Heterozygous, Homozygous, etc.
  • Nature vs. Nurture
  • Patterns of Inheritance: Mendelian Traits, Co and Incomplete Dominance, and Polygenic Traits

Uses for this product:

  • Ready to print Sub Plans
  • Flipped Classroom pre-reading
  • Whole or small group opportunity to model and teach Close Reading strategies and annotation
  • Differentiation - assign this reading only to students who have been identified as requiring reteaching
  • Differentiation - assign graphing extension only to students who have been identified as mastering the required skills
  • Interactive Notebooks: Print 2 pages in one and cut apart. Glue mini pages into notebooks with room for annotations on the side
  • Interactive Notebooks: Print entire PDF as a mini booklet and add to notebooks using these simple instructions.

NGSSHS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors. Emphasis is on using data to support arguments for the way variation occurs. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSMS-LS3-2
Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
NGSSHS-LS3-1
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSHS-LS3-3
Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population. Emphasis is on the use of mathematics to describe the probability of traits as it relates to genetic and environmental factors in the expression of traits. Assessment does not include Hardy-Weinberg calculations.
