Pre-assess your students' understanding and misconceptions about heredity with this simple quick anticipation guide. Near the end of the unit, give students a chance to reflect on their initial understanding and complete a written reflection of how their understanding has changed. Everything you need is included in this set of printable student handouts, including a key to the concepts and misconceptions assessed.
The resource is based on research from the American Association for the Advancement of Science about the most common misconceptions students have about heredity, and also on my own experiences in three decades of teaching heredity in middle schools.
There’s zero prep involved. Just make copies of the pre-assessment/anticipation guide, distribute it to students to complete and then collect and use the responses to guide your lesson planning
to address and correct any misconceptions revealed in the assessment.
You'll receive the pre-assessment, a teacher's key explaining the misconception(s) related to each question, and a student end-of-unit reflection on how their understanding has been revised since the pre-assessment.
