    About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities

SNAPs Lab Stations require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:

Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency

Narrative Station to build science literacy

Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding

Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design

Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

    Important Notes:

    • Download the FREE SNAPs Lab Stations Setup Guide for best practices, signage and editable grading rubrics

    • Download a FREE SNAPs Lab Stations Activity to learn more about my SNAPs labs

    This bundle includes:

Inherited vs. Learned Traits Lab Stations Activity (3-LS3-1)

Environmental Influence on Traits Lab (3-LS3-2, MS-LS1-5)

    • Karyotyping & Human Heredity Lab Stations Activity

Punnett Squares Lab Station Activity (MS-LS3-2)

    Pedigrees Lab Station Activity (MS-LS3-2)

    Mutations Lab Station Activity (MS-LS3-1)

These labs satisfy Next Generation Science Standard 3-LS3-1, 3-LS3-2, MS-LS1-5, MS-LS3-1, MS-LS3-2 and MS-LS4-5. They combine the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - to meet the standard. The labs also make interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms. Patterns are the similarities and differences in traits shared between offspring and their parents, or among siblings. Emphasis is on organisms other than humans. Assessment does not include genetic mechanisms of inheritance and prediction of traits. Assessment is limited to non-human examples.
Gather and synthesize information about technologies that have changed the way humans influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms. Emphasis is on synthesizing information from reliable sources about the influence of humans on genetic outcomes in artificial selection (such as genetic modification, animal husbandry, gene therapy); and, on the impacts these technologies have on society as well as the technologies leading to these scientific discoveries.
Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment. Examples of the environment affecting a trait could include normally tall plants grown with insufficient water are stunted; and, a pet dog that is given too much food and little exercise may become overweight.
Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
