Using Joseph Campbell's hero journey stages, students will analyze the Disney film Moana. Students should have studied the hero journey already; this is designed as a culminating application of their understanding of the stages.
40 high-level questions will guide the students through the movie and will require them to focus on specific steps of the hero journey. This resource is designed to be used while watching the movie.
The directions tell the students to answer 25 of the 34 bulleted questions; that provides a buffer for answers that the kids might miss while watching the film. There are 5 boxed questions that the students must answer; these are critical to understanding the film and focus on major concepts in the movie and in literature.
Three strategic pause points are included in the document to allow the students to get caught up and to permit time for discussion or clarification.
Moana's runtime is 107 minutes. Allowing time for the pauses, this lesson should take approximately 2-2.5 hours.
