Description
I found this topic to be surefire engagement, since it involves both the students' favorite characters from books and movies as well as their families.
I first set out the elements of hero stories, and ask the students to help me chart them out (does Batman take a journey?, does Katniss Everdeen encounter a wise man along her path?, etc.).
I then ask the students to compare a fictional hero to one in their own family, point for point.
