The stamp activity is a great way to get your students working both independently and as a group as they produce a large stamp celebrating a hero of the American Revolution time period. The lesson includes a description of the entire lesson, a handout for the class that explains the lesson and provides a full page graphic organizer for note taking. It also includes a four page template for the stamp itself, which will be approximately 12x16 inches.
This activity gets students to practice many skills: reading historical passages for information, evaluating important events and relevance to our history, planning a visual representation of that information, creating a visual representation of the information, and public speaking...plus they work in groups, so cooperative learning comes into play. This is a good lesson for observations because it demonstrates the teacher working as a facilitator while allowing the students to engage in higher level thinking as they use different types of intelligences. Plus, it's fun for everyone!
