The Hero’s Journey is a wonderful way to introduce students to the idea of the archetype. It is a pattern that is usually pretty easy for students to identify in literature. The notes include two examples of the pattern: one from “real life” and one from The Lion King, with which I think most students are familiar. These allow students to see how the pattern can be applied to life as well as stories. The pattern is first introduced to students in the form a PowerPoint Presentation with guided notes followed by two examples, one from the real world and one from the movie The Lion King. Next students are encouraged to identify the journey in a piece of literature using a Hero's Journey Log. Finally, there is a Hero’s Journey project. Students must apply what they know about the Hero’s Journey to a movie or book. They must create a poster in which they demonstrate their knowledge of the journey and show how it appears in their chosen story. Students will then present their project to the class, sharing their interpretation of the Hero’s Journey.
