I am teaching Ancient Greece, Greek gods and goddesses, and The Odyssey. I needed an introductory activity to have students engage with the major theme that the heroes of a culture are a reflection of the values of the people, and this concept is fluid across generations. I have created a Webquest to have students ask themselves: what is a hero? There are many types of heroes that are referenced in multiple types of media. This webquest gives students a task to complete and 15 various resources to explore with a question under each resource to guide their thinking. There are videos, songs, pictures, movie trailers, a short lecture, and a slideshow about the seven types of heroes. The concluding activity asks students to choose a modern hero that they create, that is fictional in some media today, or a real person and create a hero trading card. I asked students to give me feedback, and over 95% of the students really enjoyed it and found it well organized and diverse. Some students wished it were more interactive. The webquest lasted over a 90 minute class period. Some were finished in 75 minutes, and others needed to finish it for homework. Depends on your students.
