Poetry is one of the most challenging genres to teach because who really knows what all that flowery nonsense means? I mean is it a sun or is it some sort of anti-establishment symbol that is meant to singe the very hairs of our nerves into believing in the cause of the proletariat. AHHH but I digress.
I have come to the conclusion that if students understand the language of poetry, they have a much better chance understanding poetry itself. What is included in this unit are activities you can use with a whole class, small group, or as individual centers to help students understand the interworkings of the poetic world. A good hint is to copy these on cardstock and laminate them. Use different colors for each center, so the pieces won't get mixed up.
