The herringbone is a great way to teach students to pull out important information from whatever they're reading. They can then use that information to write a summary. I taught this to my 4th graders for a couple of weeks in a whole group: modeling and guiding. Eventually they could do it independently and I assigned it as homework.
This works well as a quick and easy formative assessment.
PS I'm happy to upload the WORD version -- it just wasn't looking right in the thumbnail sketch.
