This activity gets your students thinking deeply and putting their knowledge of the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (HR Diagram) to the test. Lesson includes a short introductory PowerPoint with embedded video; students follow that with a reading passage with conclusion questions. Great as a science / ELA tie-in.
Perfect review for the STAAR test or other standardized tests that cover the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, life cycle of stars, and classification of stars. This lesson was created to help prepare my middle school students for the 8th grade texas STAAR test. This lesson is great practice to help students reinforce the concepts of life cycle of stars and astronomy.
Activity is ready to go with NO PREP REQUIRED! All you need to do is make copies! Would work well with a sub if desired.
This lesson covers common core concepts as well as Texas TEKS (appropriate for any curriculum that covers astronomy and classification of stars). Highly engaging, high level thinking activity / lesson.
Concepts covered include H-R Diagram, Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, astronomy, super giants, giants, kelvin temperature scale, and classification of stars. Teacher key, embedded video, downloadable fonts, and links to additional resources included at no additional cost! Approximately one to two class periods in length. As a point of reference I teach a 50 minute class and generally complete this lesson in two days (I go a little slower since the HR Diagram is often difficult for my students, and is a concept covered on the 8th grade STARR test).
Please note: to protect the integrity of my work and to respect the large amount of time I have devoted to developing this resource, the PowerPoint is protected from editing. This in no way prevents you from accessing or using all the many features of the product. Created by Mister Science.

Common Core Standards addressed in this lesson:
Analyze the author's purpose in providing an explanation, describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text.
This standard is met when students read the passage and apply that knowledge to the procedure used when classifying stars.
Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).
This standard is met when students compare the description of star classification in the text and compare them to the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) addressed in this lesson:
(8) Earth and space. The student knows characteristics of the universe. The student is expected to:
(A) describe components of the universe, including stars, nebulae, and galaxies, and use models such as the Herztsprung-Russell diagram for classification
This standard is met when students use the text provided in the activity to answer questions regarding the HR Diagram and gain a deeper knowledge of the HR Diagram and how stars are placed on the chart.
