Hexagonal Thinking Template
Hexagonal thinking in is a great visual tool for enabling students to organise and deeply understand a topic. Students are able to make deep connections between their thinking, they can see commonalities and generate ideas that extend beyond a surface level.
Whole/small group or individual learning engagement.
We begin with one idea, concept or theme in one hexagon. We then extend our thinking and begin filling in the other hexagons. We cut out the hexagons and start moving them around making connections between our ideas. The students then paste them into their books, create posters etc. It is wonderful to hear students explain their thinking processes as they are developing their metacognitive thinking skills.
Hexagonal thinking can also be used for pre-post, formative and post-assessment opportunities.
