Are you teaching opinion writing in your classroom?
Do you use mentor text to spark ideas and for craft lessons?
Using mentor texts is a a great way to show students the possibilities that are out there for writing. It allows young writers to stand on the shoulders of other writers and enables them to form a vision for their own writing. The book Hey Little Ant by Hooser is a great text for an opinion writing piece! The author asks the reader a question at the end of the text and it allows the reader to voice their opinion on whether the boy in the story should stomp on the ant and squish it, or save the ant's life!
