I teach high school Autistic and Intellectually Disabled students. It is difficult, it not impossible, to find age appropriate chapter books that have any degree of length to them. I have found that Junior Classics for Young Readers are books that my students enjoy and can understand. This unit is for the book The Story of Doctor Dolittle authored by Hugh Lofting.
In my classroom we spend a lot of time on locating information in text. This unit is includes a study guide (answer key included) and four vocabulary lists and related quizzes for a total of 40 words, for high school Autistic and Intellectually Disabled students who read on a second to third grade level. The questions, all explicit, include the page number on which the information can be located. For some chapters I have provided word banks and for others, students must find the answer on their own without assistance.
I hope that this unit helps all those special education teachers who are struggling with finding high school curriculum that meets the needs of their classroom.
