This is a great source for helping students to transition from mastery of recognition of basic high frequency or sight word vocabulary, to actually recognizing and reading those words in phrases and/or short sentences. As a Reading Specialist for over 26 years, I have always stressed to teachers the importance of helping students to master automaticity with high frequency words. However, I have also learned over the years, how students may reach mastery on the word list(s) we give them, but still struggle in text with those same words that they just read perfectly on a vertical word list. Therefore, we need to transition students from the word list, to phrases, to sentences. This not only helps them with their word recognition, but also increases the rate in which they become fluent with phrasing as well. I know you will find these phrase cards helpful. They can be used in small groups, independent centers or with games. Try them...I know you'll see a difference in your students' and their fluent recognition of basic sight words.
