Dear Teacher Friends,
These are flash cards I made from the new high-frequency words covered in the Harcourt Storytown First Grade reading series, Theme 3. They cover the lessons 6-12. I print several sets on card stock, laminate them, and cut them out for longevity. There are a number of ways that these cards can be used. Here are just a few:

1. Use plastic letters to make and break high-frequency words. Distribute plastic letters to each student at your teacher table. Show the students a word, then have them re-create the word with the letters. Turn the word card over, and have students scramble their letters. Now have students re-create the word again, and check for accuracy using the original word card.
2. Line up several word cards on your table top. Say one of the words, and have a student point to it and remove it from the row. Repeat this activity with another word/student.
3. Place several word cards face-up on your table top. Challenge students to create a sentence using as many of the words as possible.
4. Using two sets of flash cards, have students play memory. Lay both sets of cards out randomly on your table top face down. Have students turn two cards over and read them. If both words match, they stay face up. If not, they are returned to the face down position and the next student turns over two words, and so on.
5. Slap - Each group sits in a circle on the floor. The leader of each group has a stack of high frequency word cards. He/she lays the cards on the floor as students say the words. The leader starts the game by giving a clue such as "I'm thinking of a word that starts with . . ." Students put their fingers on their shoulders before the clue is given by the leader (otherwise they hover over the word cards). Whoever touches the correct card first gives the next clue. Rotate card stacks through the groups for practice with all the current words.
