[All profits from this work go to the Homeless ("A Hand Up" Organization).] This a lesson plan that will accomodate English Learners, and it is based upon a Fourth Grade Social Science lesson, but can be accommodated for other grades as well.
Our fourth grade social science involves the study of California and the west. It is very important for our English Learners to learn major concepts of California, and the relevant concepts and vocabulary that go with these studies. It is also listed as a California standard (Reading: 1.1; Writing: 1.4, 1.1; Comprehension:1.1, 1.2, 1.9).
I am going to exaggerate the use of nonverbal cues as I cover new concepts. As appropriate (and I am able), I will use some Spanish to clarify new vocabulary and concepts in the learner's L1. I will presume that the learner does not have academic language, nor do they necessarily have common understanding of our culture that English L1 students would be expected to have. I will extensively use cooperative learning groups to research new vocabulary and concepts. Assessments will based more upon the oral presentation and discussions that I observe within the cooperative learning groups. I will go slower over new vocabulary- particularly academic vocabulary.
