A 4 quadrant table graphic organizer with workspace. Sounds simple, but HIGH RIGOR!
The first column is titled "word problem" where students can create a word problem. The second column is titled "concrete model" where students can build a model and/or write about the manipulatives they used (extension). The third column is titled "pictorial model" where students can draw and the fourth column is titled "number sentence" where students write the number sentence. *As an extension students can write the fact families that match the number sentence.
The font is readable. The header has a spot for name and date with long lines. At the bottom, there is an extension writing activity asking "Explain how you solved the problem." Also, included is an arrow that encourages students with a phrase to "keep writing" on the back. Encourage students to write like they are teaching a friend or younger sibling how to do this.

RIGOROUS LESSON(S):This can be taught in a long math block. The teacher does it first and models it well. Aggressively monitors to make sure students go above and beyond.
CENTER: Once this is taught properly and a good model is created by the teacher, it can be used as a year long center while changing out manipulatives (play doh, holiday themed, etc.) to make it more engaging.
EARLY FINISHERS: This can be used as early finishers for higher level students.
SMALL GROUP/ELL: Connects to Gardner's Multiple Intelligences (spatial, linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic, logical-mathematical). There is reading, writing, building, sequence, creating concrete and abstract, and more all of which helps growing students on any level.
